Coaches:

Gia Abashidze: Was  for six seasons assistant coach of the Ohio State fencing team. Coach Gia was very instrumental in helping the Buckeyes  Fencing team in  their success of achieving  NCAA titles in 2004, 2006 and 2008. Coach Abashidze  joined the Penn State University Fencing Coaching Team in September of 2009. Originally from Georgia, USSR, he has coached fencing for over 20 years and lived in the U.S. for 11 years. Abashidze was a six-time USSR national foil champion and twice competed for the Soviet National Team. During his career he also placed second at the European Cup and won a World Cup in Hungary. Abashidze placed first at the 1998 World Masters Games and has experience with the Georgian national foil team. During his tenure in the United States he has trained several athletes for the US National Team, including Monique DeBruin (foil) and Tasha Martin (foil) in 1997 and Cody Mattern (epee) in 2000 and 2003. Among his latest students is Andras Horanyi 2007 and 2008 NCAA winner (OSU) and placed second in the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials in foil, just missing a spot in the Beijing Olympics, and Hanna Thompson Silver medalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Isabel P Alvarez: Born in Buga, Colombia has been in the sport of fencing since she was 11 years old. In her native country she fenced furiously achieving numerous national titles until she moved to the United States in 1987.  She returned to Fencing in 1991 and fenced for Hunter College in New York City where she earned the title all conference and all region winner. In 2001 she became the assistance fencing coach at Hunter College and coached the foil men and women varsity team. On the same year she also became a certified fencing coach in foil and saber from the United States Coaches College. In 2004 she founded her fencing Club "Profencing-Proesgrima" in Long Island, NY.  Also in 2004 she returned to competitive fencing and debuted in the international level representing Colombia at the 2004 Foil world Championships in New York City.  In 2006 she took 5th at the Buenos Aires Foil World Cup and competed at the 2006 World Championships in Torino, Italy.  In 2008 she reopened her club "Profencing" in Columbus, Ohio and founded the Youth Elite Fencing program. In Nov 1st 2009 Profencing stablish the first fencing club in Westerville, OH. As a coach she hopes to be able to guide and coach her students not only at the physical, tactical and technical level but also at the mental level.  Her fencing experience at the international level had taught her that the biggest obstacle for achieving success in any endeavor or competition can be one’s poor and frustrated state of mind. Ms Alvarez is currently  studying and preparing herself to obtain the title of "Fencing Master".
